Centre Profile

Bath YFC

What's going on in your centre right now?

"Our one to one work in secondary schools has made it clear that some young people would benefit from support at an earlier age. The current mentoring support available, is primarily for the most part focused on the secondary school sector. Furthermore, our ongoing work with young people where they have been able to develop positive and meaningful relationships with youth workers and connected them with a local community group. E.g. youth club at a local church, has been shown to make a significant difference in the lives of the young people involved.

"Bath YFC has been running the Accompanying Project project pilot working with KS2 children in Oldfield Junior School and St. Michael's Junior School and KS3 in Culverhay Secondary School. At the end of the project we compiled and published a report on the impact that the work has had on the children involved and offering recommendations for a way forward."

What does it involve?

"We aim to build the sense of self-worth and confidence of the child; to help create greater equality of opportunity for the child; and help children have opportunities to socialise and build relationships with peers and the local community. We want to support the child during the transition from primary to secondary school and build his or her resilience. The three main ways of working include one to one work, group work with peers, e.g. a lunch or after school activity, and support through transition, working with schools, local churches and parents to this end."
