Durham YFC

So, what’s the most exciting thing(s) you’ve experienced in your schools work recently?

Piloting a happiness/well being course with two different groups of young people in schools. These were run in the summer term 2010 with GAP (Group for Anxious Pupils) which is a group of year 10 and 11 pupils from across County Durham in alternative education. A secondary pilot ran with a small group of year 8 pupils from Belmont who were referred to us. These pilots were very successful and the resource is in the next stage of refinement before it becomes more widely available. Topics cover issues such as the power of forgiveness, having hope for the future, choosing activities that are positive, volunteering and meaning and purpose. Young people engaged with the material to reflect on themselves and gain more self awareness and finished the programme with ideas and tools to use in the future.

What lessons have you learnt?

We learnt that the material connected better with older youth (aged 14 up), some concepts were harder for the younger age group to grasp. The material itself is fascinating and relevant to leaders as well as young people. It is the type of course you can journey on and learn together and from each other. It was a struggle to try to adapt academic questionnaires (which find out very useful information) into accessible tools for young people with limited literacy skills.

And what happens next?

This project needs further development. The hope is to produce a workable second stage pilot for 5 local centres or reflex partners to trial, adapt, evaluate in the months following YFC conference 2011. The aim is to then incorporate these refinements and distributed more widely, potentially as an ASDAN short course.
